All Golnit surgical needles are made of high quality stainless steel of AISI 302 series. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel needles of AISI 302 series are as slim as possible without compromising strength, stable in the grasp of a needle holder, able to carry suture material through tissue with minimal trauma, extra sharp to penetrate tissue with minimal resistance, and rigid enough to resist bending but not break. The image below depicts the main elements common for all eyeless surgical needles and crucial for determining their application area.

ANATOMY OF NEEDLE

TERMINOLOGY NEEDLE

Needle Length and Diameter: At Golnit, the needle length may vary from 4mm to 75mm and the needle diameter may vary from 0.10mm to 1.57mm.  The wire diameter is the thickness of the wire originally used to form the needle body. The length of the needle positively correlates with diameter.
Needle Body and Point: There are needles with round bodies that can have either sharp or blunt points. These round-bodied needles pierce and
spread the tissues with minimal cutting (trauma). There are also needles with triangular shaped bodies, and these are referred to as “cutting”
needles. Each of the three edges is a cutting edge, and they are used to penetrate tough tissues and are ideal for suturing skin. “Conventional” cutting needles have the cutting edge on the concave surface while the “Reverse” cutting needles have their cutting surfaces on the convex surface. Reverse cutting needles have more strength than conventional cutting needles, and there is a reduced risk of cutting through tissue.  This is why the “Reverse” cutting needles are used more commenly than the “Conventional” cutting ones. The needle point symbolic image is depicted on the product label.

Swage: Attachment point of the suture and the needle.

Included Angle (Curvature):   The needles can be straight or curved, as indicated in the image below. When they are curved, they can be half-curved, ¼ Circle, 3/8 Circle, ½ Circle, or 5/8 Circle. The 3/8 Circle or the ½ Circle are the most common shapes used.  The curvature shape is depicted on the product label.
